World Day Against Trafficking in Persons: Standing Together to End Exploitation

July 30th marks the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, a global call to raise awareness, support survivors, and strengthen efforts to end one of the most serious violations of human rights: human trafficking.

Human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of people through force, fraud, or deception for the purpose of exploitation. It’s a complex and organized crime that often hides in plain sight — and it’s happening closer to home than many realize.

This year’s theme, “Human Trafficking is Organized Crime – End the Exploitation,” highlights the systematic nature of trafficking networks and the urgent need for coordinated action at every level of society to dismantle them.

Trafficking on Long Island: A Hidden Crisis

Did you know that Long Island is among the top 20 human trafficking “hot spot” destinations in the United States? Victims—many of them youth—are exploited for sex, labor, and domestic servitude, often lured by promises of a better life and trapped through coercion and fear.

At The Retreat, we are proud to stand with survivors and take meaningful action to confront trafficking and support healing.

Our Commitment to Survivors

Every day, The Retreat works on the front lines of this issue, providing comprehensive services for individuals impacted by human trafficking on Long Island:

  • Emergency Shelter for victims in immediate danger
  • Legal Advocacy to navigate complex systems and seek justice
  • ERIN Court Partnerships supporting survivors involved in the criminal justice system
  • Youth Prevention Programs to educate and empower young people against exploitation

We believe in a world where no one is bought, sold, or exploited — and we’re committed to making that vision a reality.

Knows the Signs. Speak Up. Save a Life.

If you or someone you know may be at risk of trafficking, please don’t wait. Help is available — confidentially and without judgment:
