February Is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month: Real Love Respects

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM), a time to shine a light on the importance of fostering safe, healthy relationships for young people. The theme for 2026 is “Real Love Respects,” which highlights a powerful truth: mutual respect is the foundation of every healthy relationship.

At The Retreat, we’re committed to empowering families with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to support teens as they navigate relationships. By starting conversations early and staying engaged, caregivers can help teens recognize what healthy love looks like—and what it doesn’t.

Why Talking With Teens Matters
Open, honest communication is one of the most effective ways to prevent teen dating violence. Teens need to know they can come to trusted adults without fear of judgment or punishment. Creating a safe space for dialogue helps build trust and gives young people the language they need to express concerns or ask for help.

Here are a few meaningful ways you can support your teen:

Recognize the Warning Signs
Pay attention to red flags such as controlling behavior, extreme jealousy, constant monitoring, or stalking. These behaviors can be early signs of unhealthy or abusive relationships.

Talk About Digital Safety
Relationships don’t stop at school or in person—many continue online. Talk with your teen about privacy, boundaries, and staying safe both online and offline. Not sure how to start? Our free conversation starter cards can help guide these important discussions.

Practice Supportive Listening
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is listen. Be present, validate their feelings, and respond with empathy. Simple phrases like “I hear you” or “That makes sense” can go a long way.

Use Trusted Resources
You don’t have to do this alone. Visit The Retreat’s TDVAM resource page to find tools, conversation guides, and educational materials you can explore together.

About TDVAM
Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month is a nationwide, month-long campaign dedicated to raising awareness about teen dating abuse. Every February, young people, families, educators, and advocates come together to shine a light on this critical issue. In 2010, Congress officially declared February as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, reinforcing the importance of education, prevention, and support.
