January marks Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, strengthen our communities, and take meaningful steps to prevent human trafficking. While trafficking can feel like a distant issue, it happens in communities across the United States—and prevention starts with knowledge, connection, and support.
Human trafficking occurs when an individual or group uses force, fraud, or coercion to compel someone into labor, including commercial sex acts. Traffickers often target people who are vulnerable or isolated, using manipulation and control to maintain power over them.
The Power of Connection
Strong, supportive relationships—at home, at work, and throughout our communities—are one of the most effective protections against trafficking and other forms of abuse. When people feel supported, valued, and connected, it becomes much harder for traffickers to isolate or exploit them.
Prevention isn’t only about recognizing warning signs; it’s about creating environments where people feel safe asking for help and know they won’t be judged or ignored.
How You Can Engage This Month
You don’t need to be an expert to make a difference. Small, intentional actions can have a big impact:
- Learn more about how human trafficking happens in the United States and who may be at risk. Awareness helps us recognize red flags and respond with care.
- Share resources within your network. Let others know that The Retreat and the National Human Trafficking Hotline offer free, confidential support 24/7 for anyone who needs help or information.
Together, we can build safer, more connected communities—where exploitation has fewer places to hide, and support is always within reach.
