Clients at Stephanie House, The Retreat’s emergency residential shelter, receive more than just safety—they’re supported with free counseling, legal advocacy, financial empowerment, and education as they begin to rebuild their lives.

One inspiring offering is the Career-Styling Workshop, designed to boost confidence and prepare participants for professional opportunities. The most recent session—held at The Retreat Boutique in Bridgehampton Commons—welcomed eight clients for an uplifting afternoon of fashion, guidance, and community.
The workshop was co-created by Lauren Fedorko, director of Take Charge, The Retreat’s financial education and career advancement program, and Laurie Sykes, a longtime boutique volunteer and experienced stylist.
Participants browsed the boutique freely, choosing outfits with Laurie’s expert styling tips on fit, function, and accessorizing. “That was made for you!” Laurie cheered as one client emerged in a perfect-fit dress. The once-hesitant group soon began chatting, offering each other encouragement, and smiling as they picked pieces suited for interviews or work. Each woman used store gift cards to take home their new wardrobe essentials.
Earlier this year, Ms. Fedorko also hosted a workshop at the Children’s Museum of the East End (CMEE), focused on small business development. Featuring Denise Marzano-Doty, director of Touro Law Center’s Small Business Legal Assistance Clinic, the event provided practical advice while museum staff supervised children at play.
At The Retreat, empowerment means more than safety—it means helping survivors take the next step forward.
