Esta organizaci\u00f3n local sin fines de lucro ofrece refugio, apoyo y esperanza en toda Long Island, en un momento en el que la necesidad nunca ha sido tan grande.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

En los tranquilos rincones del este de Long Island, existe un refugio seguro para las familias que huyen del peligro. The Retreat, una organizaci\u00f3n sin fines de lucro del East End, ofrece alojamiento de emergencia, asesoramiento y asistencia legal a las v\u00edctimas de violencia dom\u00e9stica, agresiones sexuales y trata de personas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fundada hace 38 a\u00f1os por un grupo de mujeres y hombres locales de ambos partidos pol\u00edticos con una misi\u00f3n com\u00fan \u2014ayudar a las mujeres necesitadas\u2014, la organizaci\u00f3n se ha convertido en un salvavidas fundamental para cientos de familias de los condados de Suffolk y Nassau, ofreciendo no solo seguridad, sino tambi\u00e9n las herramientas necesarias para reconstruir sus vidas y recuperar la esperanza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La encargada de dirigir el retiro es Cate Carbonaro, una antigua defensora p\u00fablica cuya carrera se ha caracterizado por su profundo compromiso con los sobrevivientes. Su experiencia jur\u00eddica le proporciona un conocimiento \u00fanico de las barreras sist\u00e9micas a las que se enfrentan las v\u00edctimas, as\u00ed como las herramientas necesarias para ayudarles a superarlas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe dedicado mi carrera profesional a apoyar a los sobrevivientes, al tiempo que trabajaba con quienes causaban el da\u00f1o\u201d.\u201d<\/em> Dice Carbonaro. \u201cHe visto c\u00f3mo el trauma puede transmitirse de generaci\u00f3n en generaci\u00f3n. \u00bfC\u00f3mo comenz\u00f3 el retiro?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Al escuchar a Carbonaro hablar sobre los inicios del Retiro y su misi\u00f3n, se podr\u00eda pensar que lleva trabajando all\u00ed d\u00e9cadas, en lugar de poco m\u00e1s de un a\u00f1o. Su pasi\u00f3n por el Retiro parece ser muy profunda. Seg\u00fan ella, el Retiro comenz\u00f3 con un notable acto de solidaridad comunitaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHace treinta y ocho a\u00f1os, fue un peque\u00f1o esfuerzo popular\u201d.\u201d<\/em> dijo Carbonaro. \u201cAlgunos miembros del Club Rotario de East Hampton se dieron cuenta de que las mujeres sobrevivientes de violencia dom\u00e9stica, independientemente de sus ingresos, no ten\u00edan ad\u00f3nde ir. Desde esos humildes comienzos, la organizaci\u00f3n sin fines de lucro se expandi\u00f3 para incluir asesoramiento, defensa legal y educaci\u00f3n preventiva. Bajo el liderazgo de Carbonaro, la organizaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n ha intensificado el apoyo a los sobrevivientes de la trata de personas, una necesidad creciente pero a menudo oculta que se cruza con la violencia dom\u00e9stica, la inseguridad de la vivienda y la vulnerabilidad econ\u00f3mica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El refugio de The Retreat est\u00e1 ubicado en una zona apartada y secreta al este. \u201cEs un lugar precioso\u201d, seg\u00fan Carbonaro, con un parque infantil al aire libre, una gran cocina, una sala de estar, un comedor y espacios comunes con muchos sof\u00e1s donde padres e hijos pueden sentarse, jugar y sentirse seguros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las familias (un padre o madre y sus hijos) disponen de sus propias habitaciones y ba\u00f1os. \u201cOjal\u00e1 tuvi\u00e9ramos espacio para que las personas solteras pudieran estar solas, es horrible tener que dejar a una persona mala y tener que compartir habitaci\u00f3n con alguien que tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 traumatizado. Queremos ayudar al mayor n\u00famero de personas posible\u201d.\u201d<\/em> Dice Carbonaro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo ayuda The Retreat a los sobrevivientes m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de proporcionarles un refugio?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

La defensa legal es fundamental. Los defensores gu\u00edan a las sobrevivientes a trav\u00e9s de los informes policiales, las \u00f3rdenes de protecci\u00f3n y las audiencias judiciales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLos tribunales dan miedo, especialmente para alguien que huye del maltrato\u201d.\u201d<\/em> Dice Carbonaro. \u201cNuestros defensores los acompa\u00f1an en cada paso del camino\u201d.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Retiro tambi\u00e9n da prioridad a la prevenci\u00f3n y la educaci\u00f3n, colaborando con escuelas, hospitales, departamentos de polic\u00eda y grupos comunitarios. Los programas ense\u00f1an el consentimiento, los l\u00edmites y la concienciaci\u00f3n sobre la violencia dom\u00e9stica y la trata de personas, desde el primer grado hasta la preparatoria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los programas van m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de las paredes del refugio. La iniciativa Long Island Father Initiative ayuda a los padres a reconstruir sus relaciones y habilidades parentales. Los programas de empoderamiento financiero ayudan a los sobrevivientes a reconstruir su cr\u00e9dito, sus curr\u00edculums y su independencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEs lo que m\u00e1s me gusta de lo que hacemos porque es muy diferente de lo que la gente cree que hacemos\u201d.\u201d<\/em> dice Carbonaro. \u201cLlevamos unos 15 a\u00f1os con la iniciativa The Long Island Father Initiative, que ha pasado bastante desapercibida y se dedica a ayudar a los pap\u00e1s. Es totalmente gratuita, no es obligatoria por orden judicial, los pap\u00e1s se inscriben por su cuenta y ofrecemos clases y cursos para ayudarles a conseguir trabajo, redactar curr\u00edculums y comprar trajes. Tambi\u00e9n ayudamos a sus hijos\u201d.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo est\u00e1 respondiendo el retiro a las crecientes necesidades en Long Island?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Con el cierre de los refugios en el condado de Nassau, The Retreat se ha ampliado para satisfacer la creciente demanda. El a\u00f1o pasado, esta organizaci\u00f3n sin fines de lucro atendi\u00f3 a m\u00e1s de 500 clientes, muchos de ellos ni\u00f1os.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo fue tu primer a\u00f1o en el trabajo?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFue un a\u00f1o realmente tumultuoso para todas las organizaciones sin fines de lucro: comenzamos el a\u00f1o pasado, la tercera semana de enero, con todos los subsidios federales recortados durante un d\u00eda al comienzo del a\u00f1o, congelados por un tribunal, lo que marc\u00f3 el inicio de un a\u00f1o de ganancias y p\u00e9rdidas de financiamiento para muchas organizaciones sin fines de lucro, lo que gener\u00f3 mucha incertidumbre. El apoyo de la comunidad mantiene el Retiro en funcionamiento y garantiza que todos los servicios sigan siendo gratuitos. Los voluntarios, los donantes y las asociaciones locales marcan una verdadera diferencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSiempre estamos buscando voluntarios que nos ayuden en nuestro refugio a organizar ese gran armario de ropa para los clientes. La l\u00ednea de atenci\u00f3n telef\u00f3nica no es para todo el mundo, pero hay personas que se desenvuelven bien en situaciones dif\u00edciles.
