Prevention Education Specialist

Job Summary

Prevention Education Specialists are responsible for developing, teaching, and implementing The Retreat’s educational initiatives.

Full-time position working out of our East Hampton office with travel to locations throughout the East End of Long Island, some evening weekday hours, and occasional assistance at weekend events


  • Teach school-based (K-12) and community-based prevention workshops, including healthy relationship skill-building and the prevention of bullying, domestic violence/dating violence, and sexual abuse.
  • Tailor The Retreat’s education curricula and materials to meet the needs of the targeted audience. Identify or create new curricula, as needed.
  • Lead the expansion of The Retreat Teen Leadership Project by assisting in the design of and leading workshops for teens to help further the Teen Leadership Project’s mission of “preventing abuse and promoting respect” throughout the East End community.
  • Build student and community involvement through outreach campaigns that include targeted events and the utilization of traditional and social media.
  • Connect with and recruit students to volunteer and participate in trainings and special outreach awareness events. Mentor and support students as they develop outreach projects.
  • Develop and implement evaluation strategies to determine the effectiveness of programs and workshops. Compile and report on data on a quarterly and as-needed basis.
  • Maintain records of all activities completed.
  • Prepare outcome reports as requested.

Reports to the Education Program Director.


  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 – 4 years of education and/or community outreach experience preferred. Social work or mental health background a plus.
  • Comfort and ability to provide education through group workshops and one-on-one meetings.
  • Comfort working with all ages ranging from kindergarten to high school to adults. Emphasis on ability to work with teens through the Teen Leadership Project and school presentations.
  • Ability to maintain a trauma-informed and caring approach to connecting with students and community members. Understanding of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking with a willingness to continue building knowledge in the field.
  • Ability to utilize social media for outreach and communication purposes.
  • Must be able to carry boxes and tables to set up for special events. Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation required.
  • Fingerprint clearance is required.
