Bilingual Family Assistance Counselor

Job Summary

This position provides supportive counseling to child and teen victims of domestic violence and supportive family counseling to the non-abusing parent victims of domestic violence. The counselor will provide crisis intervention and education regarding the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault.


  • Provide victims of family violence and sexual assault with individual, child-parent, and/or group counseling.
  • Maintain accurate statistics and records of services.
  • Refer individuals to other agency services and community resources, as is appropriate.
  • Provide individual counseling sessions for children who have witnessed or experienced family violence and their non-abusing caregiver.
  • Provide parent-child or family counseling sessions for children who have witnessed or experienced family violence and their non-abusing caregiver.
  • Use evidence-based therapy practices for counseling sessions with both children and non-abusing parents.
  • Coordinate with partnering Family Service League and community organizations to provide ongoing support and intervention to client family systems.
  • Provide crisis intervention and screening services while assisting in answering The Retreat’s 24-hour hotline.


  • Master of Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or comparable degree required. License required within 6 month of hire.
  • Students who are graduating with Master’s level degrees in May of 2022 will be considered under strict guidelines.
    • Provisional license must be applied for immediately and proof that the application was completed must be submitted.
    • Employees must schedule their licensure exam within the first 45 days of employment and documentation must be submitted.
  • Prior internship or clinical experience in working with families impacted by trauma including TF-CBT, play therapy, and motivational interviewing is required.
  • Good oral and written communications skills with the ability to work as a supportive team member.
  • Spanish/English bilingual preferred.
  • Good computer skills required. Must learn The Retreat’s systems.
  • Familiarity with family systems theory and relationship issues. Understanding of family violence and sexual assault issues.
  • The base office for this position is located in Hauppauge. Occasional travel to Riverhead and East Hampton locations may be required.
  • Evenings are required to accommodate children and teen schedules.
  • Hybrid work model of 3 in-office days, 2 remote days. Subject to change.
  • Fingerprint clearance is required.
Master of Social Work, Mental Health Counseling. License required.
